The calf thing cleared up, then the knee started. There is a reason your niggles keep moving, and it is not bad luck.

One niggle clears and the next arrives. The pattern is the diagnosis.

The first kilometre of every run, you do the inventory. Left calf: present, behaving. Right knee: quiet so far, but it knows you're watching. Hamstring: whatever that was last month, apparently gone.

You do this so automatically you have stopped noticing it. Every run begins with a systems check, because at any given moment something is at eighty-five percent, something is on probation, and something has just been cleared but not forgiven.

You are never injured, exactly. You have not missed a proper block in years. But you also cannot remember the last week where every part of both legs was simply, boringly fine.

Ask any physio and they will tell you this runner is one of the most common they never see, because nothing ever gets bad enough to book the appointment. And most of these runners have privately reached the same conclusion: my body is just a bit rubbish. Some people got durable legs. I got these.

That conclusion deserves to be taken out the back and retired, because the pattern you think is random has a single cause.

The lottery

Lay your last couple of years out honestly and it looks something like this.

Different tissue every time. No pattern in the location. Which is exactly why it feels like a lottery, or a curse, or evidence of a rubbish body.

But look at what those entries share. Every one of them is a small region of muscle or connective tissue where accumulated micro-damage got slightly ahead of repair. Not far enough ahead to become an injury. Just far enough to grumble, demand two weeks of caution, and then hand the baton to the next spot.

Where does that micro-damage come from? Every footstrike lands with around three times your body weight and sets the muscle oscillating, a tiny high-frequency judder, on every one of the roughly ninety strides per leg per minute. Tens of thousands of times per run, every run, the tissue takes another small hit. Most of it repairs between sessions. The bit that doesn't repair in time becomes your next niggle, and precisely which tissue draws the short straw depends on tiny differences in load, fatigue and repair that week. It looks random. The mechanism underneath is identical every time.

You don't have five different problems. You have one problem that keeps choosing a new address.

Why the drawer full of gadgets hasn't fixed it

You own the foam roller. The massage gun. The spiky ball that lives under the desk. And they all share one limitation: they are reactive. They go to work on whichever niggle has already flared, which means you are permanently one address behind. Whack the calf, the knee pops up. Whack the knee, hello hamstring.

That is not a criticism of the tools. It is their job description. They treat the output, the already-irritated tissue, and they do it after the run. None of them can reach into the run itself and reduce the input: the oscillation generating the micro-damage in the first place.

Muscle Containment Stamping

The thing built to reduce the input comes from 2XU, an Australian company founded in Melbourne in 2005, born from professional triathlon and now the official supplier of compression garments to the Australian Institute of Sport.

Muscle Containment Stamping, or MCS, is a web of silicone stamped inside the fabric of their Light Speed tights. It traces the lines of the quads and calves, the exact tissue on your ledger, and grips them, clamping the oscillation on every stride.
