Nobody explains the physics of running at 95 kilograms. So here it is

Runners over 90kg are doing measurably more work on every stride than the people they train with. Almost no one tells them that, and almost nothing is built for it.

Forty minutes into the Sunday run, it arrives. A deep ache through the quads that the two blokes you run with, both fifteen kilos lighter, never seem to mention.

You hold the same pace. You do the same sessions. And somewhere in the back half of every long run, your legs start paying a bill theirs apparently never receive.

Most bigger runners quietly file this under personal failing. Not fit enough. Not built for it. Should probably be lighter before taking running seriously.

All three conclusions are wrong, and the reason they are wrong is arithmetic that almost nobody bothers to show you.

The arithmetic nobody shows you

Every footstrike while running lands with a force of roughly three times your body weight. That figure gets quoted all the time. What almost never gets said out loud is what it means when you scale it.

Now run the numbers across a session. At roughly 90 strides per leg per minute, an hour of easy running is more than ten thousand footstrikes. The 95-kilogram runner absorbs on the order of five hundred tonnes more cumulative load in that hour than the 65-kilogram runner beside him. Five hundred tonnes. Per hour. That is not a metaphor; that is the actual difference in mechanical work your legs are doing.

You are not less fit than the runners you can't keep up with on recovery. You are doing more work than them, on every single stride.

The ache at minute forty is not weakness announcing itself. It is a heavier load arriving on schedule. And the heavy legs two days later, the ones lighter runners seem to skip, are the inflammatory response to micro-damage that scales with mass: more moving tissue means a bigger judder on every impact, and a bigger judder means more damage per stride, tens of thousands of times per run.

Why the standard advice is useless to you

Every piece of advice a bigger runner gets is a variation of the same sentence: weigh less. Even when it is well meant, it is advice about a different problem on a different timescale. It offers exactly nothing for tomorrow morning's run, which will be run at the weight you are now.

So you did the other obvious thing. You bought the max-cushion shoes. Sensible, and worth keeping. But cushioning works at the interface between foot and ground. It does nothing about what happens above the ankle, where the shock wave travels up the leg and sets the quads and calves oscillating on every impact. The oscillation is where the micro-damage happens, the oscillation scales with mass, and no shoe on earth reaches it.

Cushioned shoes solve the bottom half of the problem. Nothing you have been sold touches the top half.

Muscle Containment Stamping

The thing that does touch it comes from 2XU, an Australian company founded in Melbourne in 2005, born out of professional triathlon and now the official supplier of compression garments to the Australian Institute of Sport.

Muscle Containment Stamping, or MCS, is a web of silicone stamped inside the fabric of their Light Speed tights. Compression does not make the load disappear

You will still be doing more work per stride than a lighter runner, because physics does not negotiate. One more honest note: real compression is a firm wrestle to pull on the first time, by design. That is the pressure doing its job, not the sizing telling you something. Buy off the chart, not off your fears.

Running at 95 kilos is not a lesser version of running. It is a harder version. It deserves gear built for the actual job.
