Remember the first Saturday you ran the whole thing. No walking, no deals with yourself at the halfway mark, just five kilometres, start to finish, and a finish token in your hand that felt heavier than it should.

Tendons, ligaments, the structures in and around your knees and ankles, the chassis, have a fraction of the blood supply that muscle enjoys, and they remodel slowly. Not over weeks. Over months, commonly the better part of a year, of patient, repeated load before they are fully conditioned to the job of running.

So every new runner spends their first year in the same strange condition: an engine that has outbuilt its chassis. Lungs that can comfortably ask for a pace the knees have not yet been certified to deliver.
